A LOOK AT THE WEEKEND: Minot State heads to the University of Jamestown this Friday for a pair of dual meets with Jamestown and Waldorf College, respectively. The Beavers will then head to Concordia College (Minn.) on a quick turnaround as they're scheduled to compete in the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
RECORDS: This Friday marks the first two dual meets for Minot State in the 2014-15 season. The Beavers began the year with two open meets, the first being at South Dakota State and the second two weekends ago at North Dakota State. Minot State was 3-12 in dual meets in 2013-14 and 2-6 in the NSIC. Jamestown enters the week of Nov. 17 with a 1-1 dual record. The Jimmies opened their season with a pair of duals on Nov. 15 against Regina and Northland, splitting the weekend. Waldorf enters the week of Nov. 17 with a 0-3 record. The Warriors began their season with a pair of duals on Nov. 6.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State head coach
Robin Ersland is in his fifth season at the front of the Beaver wrestling program. Ersland, a 2010 inductee into the NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame, has a career record of 220-285-7 in 31 seasons as a head coach. He has coached ninety-nine NCAA Division II National Qualifiers and forty-seven Division II All-Americans. At Minot State, Ersland has compiled an overall record of 13-35. Jeremy Hernandez is in his first year as the head wrestling coach at the University of Jamestown. Hernandez has 22 years of coaching experience and most recently coached at New Mexico Highlands University as the assistant wrestling coach. He was also an NCWA All-American for Colorado State-Pueblo. 2014-15 marks the second season at the helm for Brad Stockton at Waldorf College. Stockton took four of his wrestlers to nationals in his first year with the program and also coached one NAIA Scholar-Athlete in his first year.
RANKINGS: Minot State did not receive any votes in the NCAA Division II preseason wrestling poll. Jamestown received 4.5 votes in the preseason NAIA poll but did not find themselves in the top 20 teams at the beginning of the season. Waldorf did not receive any votes in the NAIA poll.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: Minot State was idle this past weekend as they tried to get healthy after sustaining some injuries at their first two opens of the year. All four captains for the Beavers did not compete in the NDSU Bison Open on Nov. 8 due to injury. At the NDSU Bison Open,
Mitchell Eull (So., HWT, Buffalo, Minn.) paced the Beavers finishing in 4th place in the heavyweight division. Eull defeated two Division I wrestlers on his way to a 4th place finish in the open. He finished the day with a 3-2 overall record.
Jason Huger (Fr., 133, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) recorded two wins on the day for Minot State defeating wrestlers from U-Mary and Concordia-Moorhead. Also recording wins at the open were
Jacob Knudsvig (So., 157, Hemet, Calif.) and
Zachary Cummings (So., 149, Birmingham, Ala.).
NOTING THE JIMMIES: Jamestown began their season with a pair of dual meets against Northland Tech and the University of Regina. In their first of two duals on Nov. 13, the Jimmies fell to Northland Tech by a score of 24-15. Later that day the Jimmies rebounded with a convincing team win against Regina, taking the dual by a score of 48-6. This past weekend on Nov. 15, Jamestown competed in the DWU Open in Mitchell, S.D. Michael Nord led the way going 4-0 in the 174 division while five other Jimmies finished with two or more wins at the open.
NOTING THE WARRIORS: The Waldorf College wrestling team has already competed in three dual meets so far this season, but unfortunately for them, the Warriors have failed to come away from any of the duals with a win. In the first dual of the year, the Warriors fell to Truman State 34-9. After falling to Upper Iowa 42-3, the Warriors came their closest to coming away with a win when they hosted William Penn University on Nov. 12. The Warriors came up just short against William Penn, falling to the Statesmen 25-19.
MAKING ADJUSTMENTS: After wrestling in the 197 weight class during his freshman year,
Mitchell Eull (So., HWT, Buffalo, Minn.) made the transition to the heavyweight division and he's adjusted well so far this year. Eull took 6th place in the Daktronics Open at South Dakota State in the first open of the year and followed that up with a 4th place performance in the North Dakota State Bison Open. Eull won 11 matches last year and has already won 6 this season.
ONLY TWO: This weekend marks the only two duals the Beavers will take part in before their conference season begins with a dual against U-Mary on Dec. 11 in the Minot State Dome. Following the two duals this Friday, Minot State will compete in three more opens before they begin their conference schedule. The Beavers' conference schedule is composed of nine dual meets against NSIC opponents.
BY THE NUMBERS6: Three different Minot State wrestlers have each recorded six takedowns over the course of the first two open tournaments. Eull, Huger and
Ricard Avakovs (Jr., 157, Riga, Latvia) all have six takedowns.
7: At the Bison Open two weekends ago, seven of the 11 wrestlers that competed for the Beavers were freshmen.
15: In their first two opens of the season, Minot State has recorded 15 individual wins. Eull has recorded six of them, good for 40 percent of the wins.
