In his first season with the MISU, Murken increased the Beavers' win total by six from the previous year including the program's first ever win against a NCAA Division II ranked opponent (68-62, No. 19 St. Cloud State, Jan. 5, 2012). The Cougars are coached by Chris Johnson in his sixth season at the helm of the USF men's basketball program. During his time as head coach, he has led USF to a 113-69 overall record including back-to-back 20 win seasons during the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons. During his first year in the NSIC, he led the cougars to a 12-15 overall record. The Mustangs are coached by fifth year head coach Brad Bigler. Bigler sports a record of 79-60 during his time at the helm of the Mustang men's basketball program. That feat was accomplished two seasons ago as SMSU ran the table in the NSIC Tournament to earn their automatic bid to the tournament. Last year, the Mustangs finished 16-14 overall while this season they are paced to pass that win mark led by their defense. SMSU opponents average just 70.7 points per game, ranking them third in the NSIC. Five players average double-digits for SMSU led by Nick Smith with 12.0 points per game. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: In their past two games, Minot State has taken care of the ball exceptionally well, committing just 13 turnovers. The Beavers average 12.7 turnovers per game this season, ranking them seventh in the Northern Sun. It was the first time in four seasons that MISU has consecutive games with 10 or fewer turnovers.
TWO DARK HORSE DUNKERS: Saturday's matchup between Minot State and Southwest Minnesota State will be unique as it will feature two seniors with a history of high flying dunks. MISU's Sam Johnson (F, Las Vegas, Nev.) and SMSU's Will Giddings are 2-of-16 contestants in the 2014 State Farm "Dark Horse Dunker" Competition. The online bracket style tournament is decided by fan's votes on their opinions of the best dunker. The winner of the tournament, who will compete at the NCAA Dunk Contest at the Final Four in Dallas, Texas, will be announced on March 17.
SENIOR SALUTE: Four Minot State players,
