Beavers hang on

Minot State's Carly Boag finishes with 28 points, 18 rebounds; moves closer to becoming all-time leading scorer

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) scored 28 points and hauled in 18 rebounds and the Beavers avoided a buzzer beater to hang on for a 68-67 win over the University of Sioux Falls in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday at the Minot State Dome.

Bog was 11 for 19 from the floor and finished with six offensive and 12 defensive rebounds for a double-double in the win. She moved closer to becoming Minot State's all-time leading scorer, pulling to within 31 points of tying Kendra Meyer atop the list.

"We started putting different players inside against them and we put Carly a little more on the perimeter where she has a little more space to move and get things done," MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding said of Boag. "She could do some other things than just layups around the hoop; she's a great player."

The Beavers (16-7 overall, 11-7 NSIC) went up by three on a pair of free throws by Katie Hardy (Jr., F, Fairview, N.D.) with 16 seconds to play. MISU needed every bit of that as Alicia Boe's jumper after a scramble went in at the buzzer. After a review, it was ruled the shot was a two-point field goal securing the Beavers' one-point win.

Hardy was solid all night as she scored 2- points and added three rebounds for the Beavers. She was 6 for 6 from the line.

"Katie is always going to make free throws," said Green Gerding. "She is really good at free throws and also the high post shot. She's got ice in her veins and has hit big shots in big spots for us before and she is just a mentally tough kid that isn't afraid of crunch time."

Sioux Falls (12-11, 8-11) hung around all night as Minot State built a small lead – the biggest margin  was six in the second half – only to have the Cougars take a one-point lead with 42 seconds to play on a pair of free throws by Laura Johnson. Johnson was superb all night, also hitting for 28 points and finishing with 12 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

But she missed a crucial free throw with 17 seconds to play and Minot State up by one. Hardy, who gave MISU the lead with a jumper with 21 seconds to go, then was fouled to set up the final two plays.

"Well they average 26 3-point shots a game and they got off 27 tonight so they clearly got their shots in, but I thought they were contested shots and we made them hard shots," Green Gerding said. "We stuck to our game plan and overall our defense was pretty solid."

Johnson was the only Cougar in double figures, but Taylor Varsho added eight points and four rebounds and Sam Knecht scored six points and pulled down six rebounds for USF.

Sarah Lester (So., G, Frenchtown, Mont.) came off the bench to score seven points and added three rebounds for the Beavers, while Morgan Klose (Jr., G, Fairview, N.D.) finished with six points, six rebounds and four assists.

Minot State finishes off its regular season home schedule in the Northern Sun with a 4 p.m. matchup with Southwest Minnesota State.
