Beavers comeback falls short at No. 22 Northern State

Minot State cuts lead to one a couple times, can't overcome slow start

Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minot State University repeatedly cut a double-digit Northern State lead to a single possession, but the Wolves held of the Beavers in a 59-49 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Saturday at Wachs Arena.

The Beavers (18-8 overall, 14-8 NSIC) and Wolves (21-5, 17-5) split their senior series and finished the season as the top 2 teams in the NSIC North Division. The Beavers and the University of Mary tied for second, but the Beavers will be the No. 2 seed heading into Wednesday's first round of the NSIC Postseason Tournament by virtue of sweeping the Marauders.

Minot State will play host to No. 7 Upper Iowa from the NSIC South Division Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Minot State Dome.

Northern State did a solid job of answering the Beavers late in the game with a couple key baskets, but the bigger issue was Beaver miscues down the stretch. Minot State ended with 19 turnovers, including 13 in the second half.

"I thought it was a battle of two tired teams," said MISU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "We certainly looked tired. I thought we came out and for the first 15 minutes just went through the motions and were a little blasé."

Fouls were also key for the Wolves as they went toe the line 11 more times than Minot State as the Beavers were whistled for 17 total fouls compared to just eight for NSU. Minot State was outscored 12-6 from the line.

It was a back and forth affair in the first half before the Wolves pushed out to a 12-point lead three quarters through the first half. The Beavers, however, didn't go away and cut the lead to just one point, 41-40, on a 3-pointer by Diondra Denton (Fr., G, Great Falls, Mont.).

"We finally had a little fight in us," Green Gerding said. "That was good to see. I think it came down to Savana (Savana Kingsbury, So., F, Omaha, Neb.) and how she was a little fired up and going for rebounds and we fed off of that. That's what good teams do, they don't just roll over.

But the Beavers went cold down the stretch and turned the ball over. In fact, neither team put on a shooting clinic as NSU won despite hitting just six shot in the second half. They were 33.9 percent for the game, while the Beavers, who hit just eight second-half field goals, was only 36.5 percent from the floor.

"They were missing shots and playing into what we wanted to do, but we went through that stretch where we missed some and made some bad decisions," Green Gerding said.

Rachel Krogman paced the Wolves with 19 points and added five rebounds and three assists. She was joined in double figures by Alison Kusler who hit for 16 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in the win.

The Boag sisters each scored in double figures for the Beavers led by Carly Boag (Sr., F, Tamworth, Australia) who scored 15 points and added nine rebounds. Christina Boag (Jr., F, Tamworth, Australia) added 11 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. She also finished with two steals, two blocks and two assists. Denton finished with two 3-pointers to score six points in solid minutes off the bench.
