Stevenson's blast leads MISU to day one split

Senior Tyler Stevenson led the way with four RBI and a home run in the Beavers' 6-5 win Monday afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz.– On a day where the Beaver offensive attack was fairly ineffective, Minot State baseball was able to get the big hit when they needed it.

Minot State (3-3 Overall, 0-0 NSIC) hit a clutch go ahead, three-run home run from senior Tyler Stevenson (OF, Cheyenne, Wyo.) as they won the second game of a doubleheader 6-5. MISU fell in game one to Malone University (3-8 Overall), 3-0.

"We had guys on all day but we just couldn't seem to get the hit we needed in the first game and for most of the second game," said Minot State head coach. "We had some guys pressing and that's to be expected as it's our first game out here and still early in the season.

"We have the approach that if one guy doesn't get that job done, don't worry about it because the next guy will pick you up. That's exactly what it was with Tyler today who did a great job of helping the team getting a big hit when we needed it."

After jumping out to a 3-1 lead, Minot State had allowed four straight runs to Malone, who held a 5-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the sixth inning. After an Andrew Roach (Jr., OF, Gilbert, Ariz.) groundout, both A.J. Begay (Sr., 3B, Salt Lake City, Utah) and Connor Moughtin (Sr., C, Victoria, British Columbia) reached base to set the table for Stevenson, who belted a deep blast over the left-centerfield fence.

"He came with a fastball to start the at bat and then threw me a curveball in the dirt, so I figured he would come back with the fastball," said Stevenson. "I was able to square it up and put it over. When I saw it go over, I couldn't help but smile and I was happy to help the team get the win."

In the win, Stevenson led the team with four RBI on two hits. Roach also had two hits and one RBI while Conner Oliver (Jr., OF/P, Dayton, Nev.) led the Beavers with three hits in the game.

Picking up the win on the mound was Austin Zorn (Jr., P, Bismarck, N.D.) who came on in relief to pitch the final 1.2 innings as he picked up his second win of the young season. Zorn gave up no runs while only surrendering one hit.

In game one, the Beavers received a solid start on the mound by Joshua Larsen (Jr., P, Surrey, British Colmbia) who threw 5.2 innings, giving up six hits and three earned earns. However, the MISU offense was stagnant and managed just four hits for the game.

"Josh (Larsen) gave us a great start," said Weppler. "He pitched well but we just couldn't get things going offensively. I thought we had good at bats today but we just need to continue to work on things to make us a better team."

Minot State will look to keep the momentum rolling as they play two more games in the 2014 Tucson Invitational Games Tuesday morning. The Beavers will play Dakota Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. (9 a.m. PST) before taking on Briar Cliff University at 3 p.m. (1 p.m. PST).
