Huskies hit past Minot State

The Beavers allowed a season-high 25 hits Friday night

Box Score TUCSON, Ariz.– When St. Cloud State and Minot State met on the baseball diamond Wednesday afternoon at Kino Sports Complex, it was a pitchers dual decided by just one run.

The Friday night rematch was not the same, as the Huskies (10-3 Overall, 0-0 NSIC) outhit the Beavers (4-6 Overall, 0-0 NSIC) 25 to 6 as they rolled to a 14-3 win in non-conference action.

"We just have to be better," said Minot State head coach Brock Weppler. "We know we have to execute and get ahead in the count on the mound. We made some mistakes tonight, leaving balls up in the zone and they made us pay for it."

Matthew Davis (Sr., P, Red Deer, Alberta) started on the mound for the Beavers, but lasted just three innings as he gave up eight hits and four earned runs. SCSU wasted little time as they scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the third inning.

Doug Rolfson (So., P, Watford City, N.D.), Jamin Heller (Sr., P, Lethbridge, Alberta) and Jeff Irving (So., P, Glasgow, Mont.) all were used out of the MISU bullpen and collectively gave up nine runs in five innings pitched.

The Huskies did the majority of their damage at the top of the order as their one through four hitters went 14-for-21 with eight runs batted in and nine runs scored on the night. However, the SCSU offense was led by seven hitter Karl Sorensen who went 5-for-5 on the night with two RBI.

After trailing 9-0 to start the game, Minot State scored three unanswered runs including two runs in the seventh inning. In the seventh, Brad Rolff (Jr., Inf., North Fork, Calif.) and Nick Hammerl (Jr., Inf., West Peoria, Ill.) each picked up RBI's to cut the lead to 9-3.

St. Cloud State responded in the bottom of the seventh with three more runs; two coming on a Brandon Arnold triple. Arnold then scored as Mike Jurgella ripped a single to centerfield. SCSU then added two more runs in the eighth before setting down the Beavers in order in the ninth to seal the win.

"We know how good St. Cloud is and we know we can play with them like we did the other day," said Weppler. "Tonight we found out what can happen when we don't show up against a team like that."

Offensively, Minot State was led by Rolff who had two hits in four at bats including an RBI. Rolff was the only Beaver to collect more than one hit Friday night.

"Overall, we didn't quit fighting and we didn't quit working and trying to improve, so I was pleased with that," said Weppler. "We weren't pleased with the result but we need to bounce back tomorrow."

The Beavers, who have lost three straight games, will look to get back on track Saturday March 15 as they take Northern Sun foe Southwest Minnesota State 9 a.m. PST before having a rematch with Dakota Wesleyan University at 1 p.m. PST.
