Westmont shuts out Beavers

Minot State was only able to get three hits in Sunday's loss

Box Score TUCSON, Ariz.– In their final game of the 2014 Tucson Invitational Games, Minot State baseball struggled to get things going offensively while making numerous defensive miscues.

The poor showing led to a 12-0 loss in seven innings to Westmont College (15-11 Overall) of Santa Barbara, Calif., as the Beavers dropped their record to 6-7 on the season.

"We were flat and mentally I don't think we came to the ballpark ready to grind it out today," said Minot State head coach Brock Weppler. "Jesse (Jesse Goertzen, So., P, Steinbach, Manitoba) threw alright, he got a lot of ground balls and they certainly weren't hitting him hard. He didn't have much of a defense behind him and we didn't score any runs to give him any support.

"We just didn't stick to our game plan. We have showed on this trip both ends of the spectrum; when we are grinding and scrappy, we are a tough team and when we show up flat we aren't good at all. We need to find a way to bring our best to the field every day."

The Beavers defense struggled throughout the game, as four MISU errors led to four unearned runs for the Westmont College offense. Westmont knocked eleven hits on the day while the Minot State offense could only muster three hits in seven innings.

Collecting two of Minot State's hits were junior Nicholas Hammerl (Inf. West Peoria, Ill.) who knocked a double and single in the loss. For the year, Hammerl has been a constant at the top of the order as he leads the team with a .364 batting average and 21 total bases.

"Nick hit well all trip," said Weppler. "He is really squaring the ball up, nearly every at bat. He isn't your typical lead off hitting, he's confident and ready to swing that bat every time he steps in the box. We've had a lot of big innings that have started with him."

Paul Vogelsang (R-Fr., C, Regina, Saskatchewan) was the only other Beaver to collect a hit as he knocked a double in the sixth inning.

Minot State, who went 4-5 at the Tucson Invitational Games, will now move forward to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play as they are scheduled to travel to Fayette, Iowa on Mar. 22 & 23 to open the 2014 NSIC season.
