Beavers walk off, earn split with WSU

Conner Oliver had three RBI in the series finale Saturday afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State baseball team snapped their nine-game losing streak Saturday afternoon at Corbett Field as they beat Winona State 5-4 in 10 innings in the series finale.

Conner Oliver (Jr., OF/P, Dayton, Nev.) delivered with a single in the bottom of the tenth to score pinch runner Tyler Stevenson (Sr., OF, Cheyenne, Wyo.) as the Beavers (10-20 Overall, 4-12 NSIC) beat the Warriors (16-17 Overall, 12-8 NSIC) for the first time in school history.

"We've been struggling with competing as of late," said Minot State head coach Brock Weppler. "In that first game we had another tough loss but we were able to keep our head on straight. Our starters scratched and fought and kept us in the game, which was needed today."

In game one, starting pitcher Brock McCashland (Jr., Ogden, Utah) had a solid start as he went 6.1 innings giving up just three earned runs and seven hits while striking out four WSU batters. However, WSU got a clutch hit when it was needed most.
In the top of the seventh inning with the scored knotted at two apiece, WSU's Travis Evanson hit a grand slam home run to left field to give the Warriors as 6-2 advantage, which would serve as the final score.

MISU could scrape up just six hits in the loss led by Nicholas Hammerl (Jr., Inf., West Peoria, Ill.) and Ricco Walker (Jr., OF, Oakland, Calif.) with two hits each.

In the series finale, it appeared WSU and the Beavers were in for a back and forth game as there were seven runs scored and two lead changes in the first three innings. Starter Matthew Davis (Sr., P, Red Deer, Alberta) was pulled in the fifth inning after 4.2 innings, eight hits and four earned runs.

Trailing 4-3, Weppler turned to Austin Zorn (Jr., P, Bismarck, N.D.) to shut down the Warrior offensive attack; and that's exactly what he did.

Zorn threw the final 5.1 innings of the game and allowed just one hit, zero walks while striking out four Warrior batters. After getting an unearned run in the sixth, Zorn's pitching help set the table for a MISU's first walk off win of the season.

"He does a good job," Weppler said of Zorn. "He gets ahead most of the time and works it up and down, throws off-speed anytime he wants. He gets ahead in the count and is usually pitching in a favorable count and works with a quick pace. That's big for us."

In the tenth inning, Walker singled to lead things off for the Beavers. Stevenson was then put in as the runner and bunted over by Brad Rolff (Jr., Inf., North Fork, Calif.). Sean Arbaut (Sr., Inf., Tehachapi, Calif.) followed that up with a single to set the stage for Oliver's single.

Oliver led the way with two hits and three RBI in the win while Walker had another solid game with a single and two runs scored in the win.

"Ricco had a great day and is getting some opportunities for us," said Weppler. "He wants to play more and he just needs to continue to step up for us. There are some guys that on our team that just need to be ready when called upon and he answered for us today."

Minot State will look to build on this win as they continue their six-game home stand on Wednesday, April 23 as they host Augustana College (32-10 Overall, 22-4 NSIC) at 1/3 p.m. at Corbett Field.
