Box Score 2 MINOT, N.D. – The 2014 Minot State baseball team has hit more home runs though 32 games this season than all games during the previous two seasons.
None were bigger than
Connor Moughtin's (Sr., C, British Columbia) two-run, two out blast that tied Tuesday's first game against Augustana College in the seventh inning to force extra innings.
The Beavers (11-21 Overall, 5-13 NSIC) ended up prevailing in extra innings at Corbett Field, 9-8, to gain their first ever win over the Vikings (32-11 Overall, 22-5 NSIC). Augie recovered in game two of the afternoon to force a split as they beat MISU by a score of 13-3.
After Augustana added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a Josh Benson single to left field, the Vikings held a 7-5 advantage.
Andrew Roach (Jr., OF, Gilbert, Ariz.) hustled out an infield single with one out. A.J. Begay (Sr., 3B, Salt Lake City, Utah) then lied out to center to set the stage for Moughtin who delivered with his first home run of the season.
"That was a big at bat," said Minot State head coach
Brock Weppler. "He went up there with the right mindset and worked to get his pitch. It was a clutch at bat for us and he got a hit for us when we needed it most and Connor's a kid that lives for those kind of situations."
In the extra frame, Augie scored on a towering home run down the right field line by Jack Goihl off MISU reliever
Austin Berntson (So., OF/P, Minot, N.D.). The Beavers, however, didn't get down as they rallied with for four hits in the bottom half in the inning to walk off winners.
Conner Oliver (Jr., OF/P, Dayton, Nev.) notched his second straight walk off hit as he laced an RBI single through the right side.
"Offensively, we just stuck with our approach," said Weppler. "We never got frustrated and we got down and battled back. When we haven't played well this year we have lost that fire and lost the approach and we didn't let that happen today so that was good to see."
Oliver led the way for the Beaver offense as he laced three hits in the win. Five MISU hitters recorded two or more hits in the win as they hit 14 hits and nine RBI in the game.
In the latter game, Augustana College flexed their muscle as they scored 10 runs in the first three innings of the game on their way to a 13-3 win. The Vikings had 15 hits in the win while holding MISU to just eight.
Brad Rolff (Jr., Inf., North Fork, Calif.) led the Beavers offense in the second game with three hits in three at bats.
Minot State starter
Jesse Goertzen (So., P, Steinbach, Manitoba) didn't have his best stuff on the mound as he allowed seven earned runs in just 1.1 innings. In the game, Augie hit two home runs and four doubles off MISU pitching.
"They're a good hitting team," said Weppler. "We knew we had to fill up the zone and make good pitches to them or they could make us pay. When pitchers don't have their best stuff, they (Augie) show what they can make happen."
Minot State will now prepare for a four-game weekend series in Bismarck, N.D. against NSIC rival University of Mary (15-23 Overall, 6-12 NSIC). The series has series implications for Minot State's hopes of making the conference tournament. First pitch will be at 12 p.m. on Friday April 26.
