Box Score 2 MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University baseball team had similar afternoons Saturday and Sunday this weekend in games St. Cloud State University.
In the day's first game, MISU played extremely well and competed. In the latter game, the Beavers let things get away from them.
Sunday against Huskies (19-6 Overall, 8-3 NSIC), however unlike Saturday, the Beavers (9-12 Overall, 3-5 NSIC) were able to get their first ever win against their NSIC North foe as they won 6-1 in game one before falling 16-3 in the series finale at Jack Hoeven Ballpark.
In game one, Minot State starting pitcher
Jesse Goertzen (So., P, Steinbach, Manitoba) had his best outing of the season as he went all seven innings for the complete game win. Goertzen allowed just five hits and no earned runs while striking out two SCSU batters.
"I thought Jesse was great," said Minot State head coach
Brock Weppler. "He did a good job of keeping them off balance and attacking their hitters. Even when he would get behind in the count he would come back and made a pitch every time he had to. He kept the ball down and had a good feel for the zone today."
Goertzen's key on the mound was inducing the ground ball. He recorded 10-of-21 outs via ground balls in the infield.
Offensively, the top of the Minot State lineup did most of the damage as the first five hitters in order recorded at least one hit. A.J. Begay (Sr., 3B, Salt Lake City, Utah) led the way with three hits and two RBI off a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning. It was Begay's fifth home run of the season.
"A.J. is seeing the ball well and he isn't missing too many pitches right now," said Weppler. "Hopefully that continues for the rest of the year for him because he adds a lot of our lineup when he swings for power."
Andrew Roach (Jr., OF, Gilbert, Ariz.) and
Connor Moughtin (Sr., C, Victoria British Columbia) also had solid games for the Beavers with two hits and one RBI apiece.
In the final game of the series, both teams showed some sloppiness as they combined for seven errors in the game. However, SCSU mashed 13 hits, including three home runs and five doubles. Minot State managed just seven hits in the game led by
Brad Rolff (Jr., SS, ) with a single and a double.
"In game two I think we came out and hit the ball well," said Weppler. "We hit the ball hard, but at their guys. It's baseball so you're not always going to hit but I thought we had good approaches and had better focus than yesterday. Our bullpen needs a little work but we definitely didn't lack effort today."
After starter
Austin Berntson (So., P, Minot, N.D.) was chased from the game after five innings pitched, the Minot State bullpen and defense struggled. Five different pitchers combined for three innings pitched, giving up ten runs and six earned runs.
Minot State will be back in action on Wednesday April 9 as they will travel to Fargo, N.D. to take on the NCAA Division I North Dakota State University Bison in a non-conference game. MISU will be back in NSIC action Saturday April 12 as the host NSIC South opponent Concordia University, St. Paul in Minot.
