MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's
Kari Clements (RFr., G, Trevor, Wis.) knocked down a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to force overtime.
The Beavers took over from there.
Minot State outscored the University of Regina 15-4 in overtime to run away with a 108-97 win in NCAA Division II women's basketball Sunday at the Minot State Dome. It was the second and final exhibition game for the Beavers.
"That's a really good team," MSU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding said of the Cougars. "They hardly have a loss on their record. They've played about 11 games so they're well-schooled in game situations.
"For us to come out on top in a game like that is really big. It says a lot about our kids."
The Clements 3-pointer capped a wild fourth-quarter rally for the Beavers, who trailed by as many as nine-points late in the game. MSU rallied with a swarming full-court defense, causing multiple Cougar turnovers late in the game.
"I can honestly say I don't know at what point or how much we were even down because we just kept pushing and pushing and switching our presses." Green Gerding said. "Our kids were great about getting into the right things tonight."
The Beavers raced out to a comfortable lead in overtime behind six quick points by
Alex Haley (Jr., G, Libertyville, Ill.) She paced the Beavers with 20 points, hitting 8 of 15 shots from the floor.
Regina's post play of Charlotte Kot, Alyssia Kajati and Sidney Dobner helped the Cougars finish with a 49-32 rebounding advantage as the trio combined for 24 rebounds. They also helped their cause with a combined 50 points, including a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds from Kot. They were complimented by guards Kehlsie Crone (15 points) and Katie Polischuk (18 points), who hit six of 13 3-pointers.
MSU countered with excellent balance scoring and solid bench play. The Beavers had six in double figures. Joining Haley was Clements with 17,
Savana Kingsbury (Sr., F, Omaha, Neb.) 12,
Morgan Hunter (So., G, Invercargill, New Zealand) and
Madison Wald (Fr., G, Minot, N.D.) scored 11 each and
Kanesha Woods (Jr, G, Little Rock, Ark.) chipped in with 10. The Beavers bench, behind Clements, Wald and Woods, finished with 51 points and 16 rebounds.
The Beavers begin the regular season Nov. 13 and 14 with nonconference games against Pittsburg State and Washburn University at the MSU Dome.
