A LOOK AT THE WEEK: Minot State will finish its December schedule with a trip to the University of Mary on Friday, December 16. The nonconference dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
RECORDS: The Beavers are 2-4, 0-2 NSIC after a three-dual weekend when they defeated Truman State, but fell to two ranked NSIC opponents. The Marauders are 0-2, 0-1 NSIC after most recently suffering a loss to Upper Iowa.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State head coach
Evan Forde is in his second season at the helm of the wrestling team. He is the eighth coach in MSU history and the second coach since the reinstatement of the team and the move to NCAA Division II. Forde is 6-18 overall in his career. Adam Aho is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Mary wrestling team. After a four-year career as a starting wrestler at North Dakota State, Aho graduated in 2009. He then went on to become an assistant coach at Minnesota State before being named the Marauders head coach in 2013. Aho has an overall record of 10-39.
RANKINGS: Neither Minot State nor Mary were ranked in any of the most recent wrestling polls.
ALL-TIME AT A GLANCE: The Beavers are 3-4 against the Marauders since joining the Division II ranks in 2011.
LAST TIME OUT: Minot State split its two duals with Mary last season, winning the nonconference competition 18-16, but dropping the NSIC match 37-10. In the 37-10 loss, hosted by the Marauders, the Beavers were able to win three matches including one by
Cody Haugen (149), who defeated his opponent in a 7-3 decision. Haugen also won his match in the first dual the two teams faced each other in, facing two different opponents in the duals.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: Minot State is coming off of a 1-2 weekend in which they won a neutral site dual against Truman State 29-15. The Beavers are now 2-2 in neutral site duals. The two losses came against top 25 NSIC opponents No. 5 Upper Iowa (42-3) and No. 19 Minnesota State (36-6).
Carlos Toledano (174) earned the lone victory for the Beavers against the Peacocks while
Liam Hayden (125) and
Jered Sublet (141) earned wins against the Mavericks.
NOTING THE MARAUDERS: Mary is the 11th ranked team in the December 5 d2wrestle.com Super Region III poll, leading the Beavers by just one spot. With ranked wrestlers at 125 (Josh Jensen), 133 (Tate Barnhardt) and 141 (Reed Cronin) the Marauders are a strong team in the lower weight classes. Jensen and Barnhardt are Mary's top ranked wrestlers, both at No. 6, while Cronin is No. 8 in his weight class.
DOUBLE-DIGIT CLUB: Three MSU wrestlers earned wins this past weekend to move them into double-digits in the win column.
Jered Sublet (141) leads the Beavers with 11 wins, earning two last weekend.
Cody Haugen (149) and
Carlos Toledano (174) are second on the team with 10 wins apiece. Toledano leads the Beavers with a win percentage of .667, edging out Sublet with .647.
THE BIGGER THEY ARE: This season, the heavyweights have led the Beavers in wins by fall. Team leading
Austin Moen has four wins by fall so far this season. The freshman from Foxholm, N.D. has made this his calling card early in his career as he has won five total matches this season, making his wins by fall 80 percent of his win total. Other heavyweights,
Jake Belland and
Mitchell Eull have pinned their opponents three and two times, respectively, making it nine pins total for the heavyweights at MSU.
SUPER REGION III: Minot State is the No. 12 team in the December 5 d2wrestle.com Super Region III poll. The Beavers have three individually ranked players to earn them the 12th spot. Despite suffering an injury early in the season
Mitchell Eull is the sixth-ranked wrestler at heavyweight. At 157 and 174,
Shane Sheppard and
Carlos Toledano are both ranked eighth in their weight classes.
