Beaver Men's Basketball Looks to Start Season Strong in Arkansas

(MINOT, N.D.) -- The Minot State Men's Basketball team heads into their season this year with a roster full of things to prove. The Beavers lost their leading scorer, as well as three of their top six. However, on the other side of that coin, they bring back their second and third-leading scorers and four other players who played in 32, 26, 24, and 17 games. The Beavers come to the table this year with a mixture of experience and unproven freshman and transfers.

The players that are on the team are out to prove the doubters wrong as they were picked 15th in the conference and 8th in the NSIC North.

Point Guard:
The Beavers are experienced at the point guard position with a returning starter and a junior college transfer.

At the point guard spot, the Beavers will give heavy minutes to Max Cody. Max is a player who started all 32 games for Minot State last year as a sophomore. He is a well-rounded player as he was the third-leading scorer last year, averaging 12.9 points per game. In addition to that, he led the team and was second in the conference in assists, assists per game, and assist/turnover ratio.

Duane Goodman, in his first year as a Beaver, transferring from Green Mountain College, is expected to be the primary ball-handler off the bench for the Beavers. At Green Mountain, he was a double-figure scorer in each of his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Wing:
The Beavers also return a bevy of experience at the wing position with three seniors and a returning sophomore.

Kyle Beisch is the first to talk about when discussing the wings for the Beaver Men's Basketball team. He was named as the NSIC Player to Watch for the Beavers after averaging 13.4 points per game as a junior last season. He is known for his strong shooting ability, especially from behind the arc. In his first year at Minot State, he made over 38% of his three-point shots and made over 40% in each of his two years at Iowa Lakes Community College.

Nibra White is now entering his senior year at Minot State University. Last year he was a contributor off the bench, scoring 3.7 points per game in 23 games. This year he will be expected to take a step up as his role increases to being a projected regular starter. The Chicago native shot 47% last year and is expected to be a strong defensive presence on the wing as well as help provide an energy boost.

Trevor Rothstein returns for his final collegiate season. Trevor has been a solid bench contributor throughout his career. In the last two years, health has prevented him from playing full seasons, but he started 12 of the 14 games he played in last season, averaging 3.2 points per game and contributing on the glass, averaging 3.9 rebounds per game.

Aleksa Cucovic is returning as a sophomore for the Beavers. He will be expected to take on an increased role from his 9 minutes a game last year and be relied upon as a key piece off the bench.

Post:

There are three bigs who are expected to get the majority of the minutes for the Beavers down low. Kody Dwyer and Sam Ohlrich are the returners. Meanwhile, Stephane Manzi was brought in as a junior college transfer.

Junior, Stephane Manzi, brings a different style than the other two as he uses his length to his advantage down low and has the chance to be an outstanding interior defensive presence with his shot-blocking ability. As a sophomore at Laramie County Community College, he averaged 7.5 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Kody Dwyer is also a junior. The Zimmerman, Minn. native was a regular piece of the rotation last season, playing in 29 games and starting 12. He is a little bit more of a traditional big that wants to beat you down low and is not going to try to stretch the floor much. He is effective in the paint, however, as he shot 67.7 percent from the floor last season.

Sam Ohlrich redshirted last season for the Beavers after playing somewhat regular minutes as a freshman. That year, he played in 19 games scoring just below two points per game and grabbed 1.1 rebounds per game.

The Beavers first two games come on Friday, November 8, and Saturday, November 9, against Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University. The game Friday is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m., while the game Saturday is a 2:30 p.m. tip.
