BROOKINGS, S.D. – It turned out to be
Lewis Cotterill's big weekend on the track.
For the second straight day the sophomore middle-distance runner led the way for Minot State as he set his second school record of the weekend and clocked the second-fastest time in the NSIC with a top-notch finish Saturday at the Jim Emmerich Alumni Invitational indoor track and field meet hosted by South Dakota State.
Cotterill finished third overall in the 800 meters on Saturday in 1 minute, 54.37 seconds, a time that broke the all-time school record of 1:54.39 run by Brad Tighe in 2001. Saturday's time, run on a 300-meter track at SDSU, was adjusted to 1:56.01 for a 200-meter track and that adjusted time is the second-fastest time this season in the NSIC.
It was the second record effort of the weekend for Cotterill who on Friday broke the all-time record in the 600 meters, clocking a time of 1:21.39 on the 300-meter track at SDSU. That time was adjusted to 1:22.61 which bested the all-time fastest 600 in Minot State history of 1:22.67 run by Khaldon Evans in 2010, and also is the fastest time in the NSIC this winter.
Cotterill's efforts on Saturday led a powerful performance by the Beavers as
Juan Gutierrez was 12
th in the 800 meters in 1:57.24, and
Trent Holiday finished 15
th in 1:59.87, and both moved into the Top 8 in the NSIC in that event with their performance. Gutierrez is fourth in the league in the 800 with his adjusted time of 1:58.92, and Holiday is seventh (2:01.59).
Also adding an NCAA Division I school record was
Caitlin Cornell who raced to a fifth-place finish in the women's 3,000 in a school-best time of 10 minutes, 19.32 seconds which bested her previous personal and Minot State best time of 10:22.92 she ran in December.
While the men's 800-meter runners led the way, Minot State thrower
Hunter Clark added a season-best effort in the weight throw as he finished 11
th with a mark of 52 feet, 7 ¼ inches, and
Joseph Green added a season best in the men's 400 meters, also finishing 11
th in 51.54 seconds on Saturday.
On the women's side,

After wrapping up a busy weekend where the Beavers competed in a pair of meets in South Dakota, Minot State next heads to Minnesota this coming Friday for the Mark Schuck Open and Multi hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato, which will host the NSIC Indoor Championships on Feb. 25 and 26.
