Minot State women’s basketball looks to build on strong start to season

MINOT, N.D. – After opening their season with a pair of wins over Southeastern Oklahoma State on the road in Colorado, the Minot State women's basketball team looks to keep on rolling on the road.

The Beavers will play three games in the next six days away from home, visiting Black Hills State on Thursday, then playing at Montana State Billings on Saturday before wrapping up the road trip at South Dakota School of Mines on Tuesday.

Team leader Kate Head led the way in a pair of wins for the Beavers (2-0 overall) last weekend as she averaged 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game in the two wins, earning NSIC North Division Player of the Week honors.

Six-foot-4 freshman post Emily Srejma had a strong debut weekend, as well, with 11 points and 5 rebounds per game to help power the Beavers to two wins.
Thursday, Head, Srejma and the rest of the Beavers take on a Black Hills State team that is 2-1 on the season, which includes a 77-67 victory over Minot State's in-state rival the University of Mary on Wednesday night.

Five-9 senior guard Danica Kocer has led the way offensively averaging 19.3 points per game with 3.3 rebounds per night, while 5-11 junior forward Morgan Hammerbeck is scoring 12.0 points per game, shooting 60.9 percent from the field and grabs 6.3 boards per contest.

Saturday, Minot State battles a Billings team that is 3-0 and also went 2-1 in exhibition play.

Cariann Kunkel led the way in the three counters averaging 15.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while Dyauni Boyce is averaging 10.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She also is one of three players shooting 50 percent or better.

Back in South Dakota on Tuesday, the Beavers take on a Hardrockers team that is currently 0-2 on the season, and that will play Sioux Falls and Northern State before Minot State visits.

Piper Bauer (17.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and Madelyn Heiser (10.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg) lead the way for South Dakota Schools of Mines, which is averaging just 61.0 points per game and shooting just 39.3 percent from the field.
