Annika Gotlieb, Nina Sandoval win 1st matches in historic Minot State women’s wrestling debut

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Annika Gotlieb will now have bragging rights – first ever Minot State women's wrestling win.

And teammate Nina Sandoval wasn't far behind her.

Gotlieb won her first match of the day by a 17-8 technical fall at 130 pounds, the first-ever win for the new Minot State wrestling team as she picked up a pair of victories Saturday at the Maverick Open hosted by Colorado Mesa.

After earning a first-round bye at 155 pounds, Sandoval gave the Beavers win No. 2 with a 10-0 technical fall victory. She added another win on a successful opening day for Minot State, which sent four women out onto the mats.

"I think it's a good starting point, we got some exposure," Minot State head coach Brittney Mitchem said of the Beavers debut. "I was overall pleased to see the team work on what we have been going over and make adjustments. We had athletes make a 180 turn.

"We took this as a learning experience and we are ready to put the work back in Monday morning," she added. "We are looking forward! As an all-freshman team, we are catching on."

Gotlieb and Sandoval also added a win by pin, each, on the day for Minot State, as did Madison Parson, wrestling at 191 pounds, who also earned her first collegiate victory by pin in her second match of the day in the tournament.

Also in action, but coming up winless at 116 pounds was Zoe Desloges for the Beavers, who follow up their history first day of action with another tournament on the road next weekend, wrestling at the Waldorf Open in Iowa.
