Beaver track teams put up strong finishes to round out NSIC Championship

ABERDEEN, S.D.- The Minot State men's and women's track and field teams concluded the NSIC Championship meet on several high notes with a few podium finishes. Top three finihses earn all-conference status in individual events and top two relay teams earn that status as well. 

For the men, Kameron Toms finished one away from all-conference status in the 400 meter dash finals, as Toms hit 4th place with an impressive 49.62 seconds. Lewis Cotterill shaved off some time in the 800 meter run finals putting up a 7th place finish with a time of 1:56.31. For the men's 5,000 meter run Trent Holiday paced MSU with a 24th place finish and a time of 16:05.27 while Nicholas Merillana followed closely behind at 16:27.44 in 29th place. Both relay teams finished in the top 10. The 4x100 meter relay team took home 6th with a time of 42.91 seconds, and the team consisted fo Jaylan Brown, Joseph Green, Damian Nino, and Toms. The 4x400 meter relay team finished one spot short of all-conference honors in 3rd place with a time of 3:20.59, and that team consisted of Juan Gutierrez, Cotterill, Nino, and Toms. 

Leif Nelson capped off the Beavers in discus putting up an 11th place performance with a throw of 46.81 meters. Paul Hardy, Hunter Clark, and Corbin Harris all grouped together at places 24, 25, and 27, respectively. Hardy threw for 41.35 meters, followed by Clark at 41.34 meters, and rounded out by Harris at 40.05 meters. Nelson earned himself all-conference for his javelin performance, nabbing 3rd place with a throw of 58.23 meters. 

The women's side only saw field events and the highest Beaver finish in the NSIC Championship meet. Voted top-newcomer by the MSU athletic department, Kori Nagel led the Beavers to a 3rd place finish in discus thanks to her 46.89 meter throw. Rebecca Eacker and Chloe Gunderson finished back-to-back at 12th and 13th places, respectively with throws of 42.31 meters and 42.12 meters. Jenna Hardy rounded out MSU with a throw of 38.15 meters, good enough for 21st. In women's javelin Tori Nygard threw herself into 6th place with a throw of 39.48 meters. Lastly in the triple jump, Kenzy Kellum left in 25th place with a jump of 9.60 meters.  

The Beavers will now turn their attention towards the NCAA Championships in Allendale, Mich., hosted Thursday May 26th thru Saturday May 28th. The Beavers will now await and see which athletes qualify for participation.
