YORK, Neb. – The first individual win came way back in October for the Beavers, and a resilient, first-year Minot State women's wrestling program kept working hard and Friday earned team win No. 1.
Getting wins from
Annika Gotlieb,
Jazmin Gorder, and
Nina Sandoval, the Beavers topped Jarvis Christian (Texas) 15-5 in the York Duals on Friday, the first team victory for the new program.
In its other three duals, Minot State (1-9 duals) fell 34-5 to host York (Neb.), lost 35-10 to Texas Wesleyan, and fell 25-7 to Wayland Baptist (Texas).
Battling with just five wrestlers, the Beavers stepped onto the mats against Jarvis and grabbed five team points each at 123 pounds and at 136 as Gorder and Gotlieb each earned forfeit victories for the Beavers.
Sandoval then put Minot State on top 15-0 as she won with a first-round pin in 2 minutes, 32 seconds.
The Bulldogs got a win by pin in the 191-pound match, but by then it was too little, too late as Minot State had the program's first dual win.
"I believe we are making small strides and those will turn into bigger ones," Minot State coach
Brittney Mitchem said. "Building does take time, patience, and the right people, and our core group of wrestlers are all in and they fight and keep showing up; they will get us more wins."
The Beavers individually added a few more wins on the day, as well, as Sandoval picked up two more victories including a win by pin in 52 seconds against Marissa Gaylor of York, and Gotlieb added a win by pin in 1:08 against Erron Grimes of Wayland Baptist.
Madison Parson also earned a forfeit win at 191 pounds against Texas Wesleyan and Sandoval added a win by forfeit at 155 against Texas Wesleyan.
The duals wrap up the first of two days of action for the Beavers in Nebraska as Minot State is back on the mats Saturday competing in the York Open.
