YORK, Neb. – Coming off the team's first dual win Friday night, the Minot State women's wrestling team almost secured its first individual tournament title on Saturday.
Angelina Garcia battled her way into the open division's 235-pound title match at the York Women's Open before a setback left her as a runner-up champion for the Beavers on a day when Minot State scored that second-place finish at two more fourth-place finishes.
Annika Gotlieb added one of those fourth-place finishes in the freshman/sophomore 136-pound bracket, and
Nina Sandoval was fourth in the 155-pound bracket, as well, for the Beavers.
After a first-round bye, Garcia won her way into the tournament title match with a 5-0 decision over Addisson Hershberger of Iowa Central Community College before falling to Waldorf's Xena Hernandez for the title.
At 136 pounds, Gotlieb started her day with a win by pin over Baker's Mariam Shariq in 2 minutes, 49 seconds, then she added a win by pin in 3:45 over Northwest Kansas Tech's Crystalyn Felan.
After being knocked into the consolation bracket, Gotlieb won by pin in 2:22 over Grand View's Laura Kipnusu, earning a spot in the consolation finals where her run came to an end.
As for Sandoval at 155, she started with a pin in 1:37 over Emma Thompson of Central Methodist, then she scored a 10-0 tech fall win over Grand View's Aremie Steele.
Knocked into the consolation bracket in the tournament semifinals, Sandoval bounced back with a win by pin in 3:28 over Maya Blackman of Doane before settling for fourth place with a loss in the consolation finals.
While they led the way, Minot State also got a win by pin from
Zoe Desloges at 123 pounds on the day, and
Jazmin Gorder picked up an injury default victory and a win by pin also competing at 123 pounds.
The Beavers now get a week off to rest and prepare for their final home matches of the season as Minot State hosts Augsburg and Jamestown in duals on Saturday, Jan. 28, starting at 1 p.m.
