Beavers set to host Warriors, Peacocks at home this weekend

MINOT, N.D. – After winning 3-of-4 on the road, the Minot State basketball teams are poised to build off that momentum as they host Winona State and Upper Iowa this weekend at the MSU Dome.

Friday will be Alumni Appreciation night as the Beaver men (9-7 overall, 6-6 NSIC) host Winona State (10-7, 5-7) at 5:30 p.m. to get the weekend started, then the Minot State women (7-11, 3-9) entertain the Warrior women (9-9, 3-9) at 7:30 p.m. to wrap up the evening.

Saturday, the Minot State men once again tip things off first, at 3:30 p.m., hosting Upper Iowa (10-8, 7-5), then the women host the Peacocks (6-11, 2-10) at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.

In the men's battle, the Beavers face a Winona State team that allows the third-fewest points in the NSIC at 68.2 ppg, but also is one of the better shooting teams as the Warriors are third in the NSIC in field-goal percentage, shooting 42.6 percent.

Winona State also leads the head-to-head all-time series, 10-2, and has won the last two meetings between the schools.

As for the Peacocks, they offer a different challenge in a talented one-two punch in 5-foot-11 senior guard Jake Hilmer, who is No. 2 in the NSIC in scoring at 21.1 ppg, and 6-7 junior forward Nick Reid, who leads the league in rebounding at 9.2 rpg.

What will be the last regular-season meeting Upper Iowa and the Beavers – with the Peacocks moving to the GLVC next season – the Peacocks hold the all-time series edge, 10-4.

For the Minot State men, local star Ben Bohl turned in his best game of the season on Saturday at Augustana with 19 points, while teammates Khari Broadway and Cam'ron Dunfee continue to lead the way with solid play, averaging 13.9 and 12.1 ppg, respectively.

In the women's game, the Winona State women match their male counterparts in playing tough defense and shooting well as the Warrior women are fifth in the NSIC in fewest points allowed (61.2 ppg) and in field-goal percentage at 43.1 percent.

They're led by 5-11 junior forward Alex Dornfield who leads the NSIC in rebounding at 8.8 rpg.

Head-to-head, the all-time series is much more even than in the men's rivalry as Winona State holds just a 7-4 edge, and the teams have split their most recent meetings.

As for the Peacocks, Saturday's opponent, they shoot well from long-range hitting 33.1 percent of their 3s, and they are led by Lydia Haack who is second in the NSIC in assists at 4.3 apg, and ninth in scoring at 15.9 ppg.

As for the Beavers, senior Kate Head matches Haack as she leads Minot State averaging 16.3 and is No. 2 on the team with 57 assists behind teammate and freshman Vilborg Jonsdottir (63 assists).

And Minot State holds a firm edge in the all-time series against the Peacocks with an 8-2 edge, though the last game did go to Upper Iowa, an 80-71 win in Fayette, Iowa, last January.
