Minot State set to make history again, this time as Sioux Falls’ first-ever guest opponent

MINOT, N.D. – The Beavers were in the same place one year ago: A first-year program set to host its first-ever women's wrestling event.

Somehow fittingly, Minot State gets to be the guest on the mats as the Beavers face the Sioux Falls Cougars this Thursday at 6 p.m. in a first-ever dual meeting between the programs and the first-ever women's wrestling event hosted by the Cougars.

The Beavers (3-2 duals) head in a bit banged up with only six ladies competing in Monday's dual at Jamestown, a 29-14 loss for Minot State which a week earlier had handed the Jimmies a 30-14 setback in the final match of the Beavers Bash Duals hosted at the MSU Dome.

Julia Petryna (116 pounds) picked up a pair of wins in the Monday dual, one by technical fall and another by pin in an extra match, while Ari Korish (123) and Haleigh Lematta (143) also had wins on the mat against Jamestown.

As for Sioux Falls, they've competed in two tournaments and already picked up a first dual victory, 39-10 at Dakota Wesleyan on Sunday.

The trio of Rei Ogden (123), Brinley Green (143), and Zoe Adam (191) so far have captured the headlines for the Cougars.

Ogden went 5-1 and won the consolation bracket title at the Pointer Open hosted by Wisconsin-Stevens Point to start the season for the Cougars, and she finished fifth at the Waldorf Open.

Green went 3-3 and was sixth at the Pointer Open while Adam was fourth at the Waldorf Open, and both added wins on the mat in the dual victory Sunday.

Following the historic first match hosted by Sioux Falls on Thursday, the Beavers are back in North Dakota to wrap up a busy week of competition with more action at the University of Jamestown, competing in the Jimmie Lady Knight Open on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

Minot State has competed in one tournament so far this season with freshman Bella Hernandez (130) making a splash in her collegiate debut at the Eagles Madness tournament hosted by Life (Ga.) as she went 3-2 and advanced to the consolation semifinals.
