JAMESTOWN, N.D. -
Kelby Armstrong won four straight to claim the title at 157 pounds on Saturday, leading the way for the Minot State men's wrestling team, which opened the season at the Jimmie Open hosted by Jamestown.
Seven other Beavers placed in the top 3 at the event, including
Ethan Wonser at 141 pounds and
Cannon Potts at 197, who both wrestled for the title in their respective weight class but settled for second place.
Adding third-place finishes for Minot State were
Wayne Joint (133),
Kasius Graham (149),
Ryan Hrcka (157),
Brendan Barnes (165), and
Cayden White (184).
Armstrong started his day with a 12-2 major decision victory over Cael Larson of Northern State, then he earned a technical fall win, 16-1, over Degan Linne of Jamestown.
In the semifinals, Armstrong advanced by injury default, then he won a dominating major decision, 11-1, over Cody Wienen of Minnesota State Moorhead.
Wonser won a pair of matches by pin and scored a 5-4 decision over Logan Henningson of Concordia to advance to the 141-pound title match, while Potts added a win by pin, a win by decision, and a technical fall victory on his way to the 197-pound title match.
The Minot State men's wrestling team returns to the mats next weekend for another open tournament, competing at the Dakota Wesleyan Open next Saturday.
