GUNNISON, Colo. – For the second time this season, Minot State's
Ryan Hrcka brought home a wrestling title.
Hrcka won all four of his matches on Friday at the Western Colorado Open, bringing home the championship at 157 pounds for the Beavers, who opened a busy weekend at the tournament.
Hrcka was one of four Minot State wrestlers to place in the tournament as
Marcus Allen was third at 184 pounds,
Dylan McDonald was sixth at 125 pounds, and Daniel Bendiks was sixth at 174 pounds.
The Beavers are back in action Saturday competing in the Tracy Borah Duals hosted by Western Colorado as they'll compete against the host school, Adam State, New Mexico Highlands, and Colorado State Pueblo.
Friday in the Western Colorado Open, Hrcka battled through the 157-pound weight class opening with a 6-3 decision over Greg Coy of Adams State, then a 16-0 technical fall win over Chase Engelhardt of Western Colorado. Hrcka next won by pin in the semifinals in 3 minutes, 50 seconds over William Moneypenny of Colorado Mesa, then won a thriller in the title match with a sudden-victory, 6-3 win over AJ Van Matre of Adams State.
Hrcka adds the Western Colorado Open title to his strong season that includes winning the title at the Dragon Open hosted by Minnesota State Moorhead in early December.
Allen picked up three wins by pin at 184 pounds to finish third, opening with a pin in 19 seconds over Kai Saito of Western Colorado before a setback in the semifinals sent Allen to the consolation bracket. There he pinned Logan Noble of Colorado Mesa in 42 seconds, then pinned Remington Winmill of Colorado State Pueblo in 34 seconds to finish third.
As for Bendiks, he won his opening two matches of the day with a 12-5 decision over teammate
Kale Farrington and a pin in 4:52 over Trevor Pettit of Western Colorado, he finished sixth after three losses ended his day.
