FOREST CITY, Iowa – Minot State's two-time national qualifier,
Haleigh Lematta, led the way as she advanced to the tournament final at 145 pounds Saturday, earning a 2nd-place finish for the Beavers at the Waldorf Open.
Adding a top finish for the Beavers were
Aniya Herbin, who was 4th in the 207-pound weight class, and
Alyssa Jones, who was 4
th in the 131-pound freshmen/sophomore division as the true freshman from San Diego, California, also claimed her first collegiate victory in the tournament.
Jones was one of five Minot State women to earn win No. 1 in their college wrestling career as she was joined by teammates
Lillian Garrett,
Chloe Parsons,
Dahlia Silva, and
Gracie Tolman in claiming their first win as a Beaver.
"Great first tournament to see where we stand and what we need to work on individually and as a team," Minot State coach
Brittney Mitchem said. "Our girls took a step up from yesterday and went out and competed hard all day long.
"Along with our three placers we saw many first collegiate wins for our freshmen, and a lot of promise in our team as a whole!"
Lematta won four straight matches on her way to the final at 145 pounds, scoring a 10-0 tech fall win over Maria Sanfiel from Grand View, then an 11-2 decision over Mina Himmel from Central Methodist. She added a 6-0 decision win over Jamestown's Ann Meiman,then earned a title shot with a 10-0 tech fall win over Sara Daley from Iowa Western Community College.
The only loss of the day for Lematta came in the final as she was pinned in 2 minutes, 2 seconds by Sioux Falls' Kristy More.
Also picking up 4 wins on Saturday was Herbin in the 207-pound weight class as she won by pin over Jamestown's Celia Jaeger in 1:37, then an 11-0 tech fall win over unattached wrestler Madison Robinson. After an 8-5 decision win over Sioux Falls' Zoe Adam, Herbin suffered her first setback, a loss by pin to Harmoni Callins from Iowa Central Community College in 1:42.
Bouncing back, Herbin scored a 10-0 tech fall win over Aaliyah Presley from Iowa Central before falling in the consolation championship by pin to Iowa's Libby Dix in 2:56.
And, picking up her first collegiate win along with three more to finish 4
th at 131 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division was Jones, who started her run with win No. 1, a 10-0 tech fall victory over Waldorf's Nicole Martens.
After a setback by pin in 2:11 to Upper Iowa's Kylee Shoop, Jones then rolled off three straight victories to advance to the consolation championship. She scored a 6-0 win by decision over Abigail Ji from Iowa Lakes Community College, a win by pin over Braya Cruz from Wartburg in 4:25, and a win by pin in 27 seconds over Jaiden McLaren from Buena Vista before losing by pin to Shoop for the second time for 3
rd place in 1:54.
Adding to the day's highlights with their first collegiate win, each, were Garrett at 180 pounds, Parsons at 145 pounds,
Dahlia Silva at 207 pounds, and
Gracie Tolman in the freshman/sophomore division at 160 pounds.
Garrett picked up a pair of wins, her first a pin of Augsburg's Katie Whelan in 1:12.
Parsons also picked up a pair of wins, her first a pin of Nina Aceves from Iowa Lakes in 1:34.
Silva earned a pair of victories on Saturday, her first a pin in 1:51 of Waldorf's Olivia Burciaga.
And Tolman added her first win by pin of Gracee Tompins from Upper Iowa in 1:33.
Next up for the Beavers, Minot State competes at the NSIC Duals next Sunday, Nov. 16, hosted by Sioux Falls.
