Carroll runs past sluggish Beavers

Minot State hits just 13 field goals and records only two assists in game

Minot State senior Bojan Janjic scored a team-high 14 points in a loss Friday at Carroll College.
HELENA, Mont. – The Minot State University men's basketball team never got going.

The Beavers fell behind early and were never able to make a substantial run as Carroll College (Mont.) ran away with a 76-50 win in nonconference play Friday at the Carroll PE Center.

“There is nothing you can say, it was an ugly night. We have to try to regroup,” said MSU head coach Peter Stewart. “It's my job to get them to play harder – offensively and defensively.”

MSU (4-7) had trouble shooting the ball all night, but really struggled to get shots to fall in the second half. The Beavers hit just five field goals in the second half and scored just 23 points. MSU was 13 of 46 overall for 28.3 percent in the game and charted two assists in 40 minutes.

After an early Saints (8-3 overall) run to get to a double-figures lead, MSU made its one and only significant run, capped by a Kal Bay 3-pointer to cut the Carroll lead to just eight.

But the Saints responded. Carroll College scored five quick points to get the lead back to double digits and pushed it to 16 with just over two minutes to play on an Andy Garland bucket.

“We have to get better and show more passion,” said Stewart. “You can't come into a college basketball game and not work your butts off.”

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Beavers and sent MSU to its third straight road loss.

MSU continues a five-game road swing with a game at Montana-Western Saturday (7 p.m.)  in Dillon, Mont.

The Beavers were killed on the boards as the Saints held a 46-17 advantage. CC finished with 13 offensive rebounds, just three fewer than MSU had overall.

“When you look at the rebounding totals…that's not up to our level. That's very disappointing,” Stewart said.

Garland, the reigning Frontier Conference Most Valuable Player, scored a game-high 16 points and added eight rebounds. Chase Godecke added 14 points and nine rebounds, hitting 10 of his 14 in the second half.

MSU's Bojan Janjic scored 14 points on 4 of 5 from the field and 6 of 8 from the free throw line and led the Beavers with four rebounds. Bay hit two 3s to score 10 points and Anthony Enriquez added eight points, five steals and three rebounds.
