York's basket sinks Beavers

MSU battles all the way back, can't finalize win

Minot State's Kal Bay dribbles against Montana-Western earlier in the year. Bay finished with a game-high 36 points in MSU's last-second loss to Valley City State Thursday.
VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Minot State University's Kal Bay (Sr., G, Chandler, Ariz.) nearly single-handedly pulled the Beavers back for a win.
But in the end, Valley City State's Mike York got the upper hand.
York scored with three seconds remaining to snap a 57-all tie to give the Vikings a 59-57 Dakota Athletic Conference men's basketball win Thursday at the Osmon Fieldhouse.
The Beavers (0-1 DAC, 2-5 overall) trailed by double figures late in the second half but Bay scored 14 of the Beavers final 15 points, giving MSU a 57-56 with 1:58 remaining in the game.
The Vikings (1-0 DAC, 4-6 overall) got a free throw from Dustin Kise with :58 seconds to tie the game and set up York's game-winner. Both teams had possessions to break the tie with less than a minute to play, including the Beavers last possession where York came up with a key steal.
Bay finished with 36 points on 9 of 19 shooting from the floor, 6 of 13 from beyond the arc and a sizzling 12 of 13 from the free-throw line. He added two rebounds and an assist to complete the night.
Minot State did not shoot the ball very well from the floor for the second straight contest. MSU finished with just 32 shooting, including just 33 percent on 3-point attempts. MSU was just 1 of 8 on 3s outside of Bay.
But VCSU countered that with terrible shooting from the free throw line. The Vikings hit just 8 of 17 from the charity stripe, while MSU – the league's worst free throw shooting team by percentage coming into the game – hit 16 of 22.
The Vikings were led in scoring and rebounding by Aaron Duske, who finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. VCSU leading scorer Calvin Kraft added 10 points, but was limited to 4 of 14 shooting. DJ Carroll added 10 rebounds to the Vikings' cause.
Along with Bay, Anthony Enriquez (Jr., G, Tacoma, Wash.) added 11 points and pulled down five rebounds for MSU. Only six MSU players scored as Jason West (Sr., G, Lompoc, Calif.) was the third leading scorer with just five points.
The Beavers will look to rebound on the road Friday as they travel to Jamestown College for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. It will be the 10th road game of the season already for MSU.
