SPEARFISH, S.D. – Minot State University senior
Kal Bay (Sr., G, Chandler, Ariz.) got some redemption.
After picking up a technical foul midway through the second half in a key stretch, the transfer from Idaho State nailed one of the biggest baskets on the season for the Beavers.
Bay drilled a long 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3.1 seconds to play, snapping a 60-60 tie, and helping Minot State upset No. 3 ranked Black Hills State 63-60 in Dakota Athletic Conference action Saturday at the Donald E. Young Center.
“I'm very proud of the guys,” said MSU head coach Peter Stewart. “We followed the game plan for the most part all night. All you want is a chance at the end and we executed it. Kal never thinks he is going to miss any shot and on this one, he didn't.”
It was the first win on the road for the Beavers in conference play this season and the first time the Yellow Jackets lost on their home court this season.
The Beavers (9-12 overall, 3-4 DAC) looked all but done as BHSU pushed to 50-43 on a Luke Enos tip-in basket with just over seven minutes remaining in the second half. The Yellow Jackets used a steady dose of Enos in the second half to push to two different eight-point leads.
But MSU did not go away at any point in the second half, battling back from the deficits and battling BHSU over the final three minutes. The Beavers cut the Yellow Jackets lead to just 52-49 on a 3 by Bay from
Jason West (Sr., G, Lompoc, Calif.) and took a 53-52 lead on two straight buckets by
Anthony Enriquez (Jr., G, Tacoma, Wash.) with four minutes to go.
“Westy has been our leader for over a month now and before we went in the locker room he told me to make sure we mention Anthony,” Stewart said. “Anthony still needs to learn some things, but he is a great basketball player. He took over for a 10-minute stretch and really re-energized us.”
The game was a back-and-forth affair the rest of the way. After MSU took a one-point lead with a two-hand jam by
Kelvin Fraser (Jr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.) on a feed from West, BHSU's Will John Johnson put the Yellow Jackets up by one with a reverse layup. MSU countered once again with a big 3-pointer by
Bojan Janjic (Sr., G, Kikinda, Serbia) before Enos tied the game at 60 with two free throws.
“Kelvin is a game changer on defense, but I really like the pick he set for the pick-and-roll to get the basket from Westy late,” Stewart said.
The Beavers did a great job controlling the tempo throughout as they held BHSU to 21 points under its season scoring average. MSU also held a 42-40 rebounding edge and neither team turned it over much as MSU had nine and BHSU just seven.
“We came out in the first half and I was really proud of how we controlled the tempo and controlled our emotions,” Stewart said. “But then in the second half, we come out flat. We had trouble with controlling our emotions and were losing our composure. But give our guys credit, it was a great effort to win on the No. 3 ranked team's home floor.”
Johnson had a monster game for the Yellow Jackets (17-4, 6-1) as he scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 19 rebounds in the loss. Cain Atkinson added 17 and Enos scored 13 points – 12 in the second half – and added eight rebounds. The Yellow Jackets only hit 20 field goals in the game and shot just 20-for-58 from the floor, but outscored MSU 16-3 from the free-throw line.
Janjic led MSU for the second night in a row, scoring 17 points. Bay added 14, Enriquez 12 – 10 in the second half – and
Jonas Pollard (Jr., G, Mesa, Ariz.) scored 10. Fraser pulled down 12 rebounds for the Beavers and West scored six points and added six assists from the point.
The Beavers return home for a pair of conference games next week as they play host to Jamestown College Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and take on Valley City State Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Dome.
