Beavers getting used to system, winning

Minot routs Mayville, Fraser sets record

Minot State's Kal Bay releases a free throw during Friday's game against Dakota State.
MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University head coach Peter Stewart joked Friday his team didn't know how to play with the lead.
If the Beavers continue to play defense like they did over the weekend, they are going to have to get used to it.
MSU holed an explosive Mayville State offense to just 53 points and 33 percent shooting in an 82-53 blow-out win in Dakota Athletic Conference men's basketball Saturday at the MSU Dome.
“We have obviously learned something. We seem to like this winning thing,” Stewart said. “Number one, it has been us following our assignments. The guys are listening to the game plan and going out and doing it. Early on they looked at us like 'whatever' but the last couple of games; we really have done a good job on defense.”
The Beavers' Kelvin Fraser has been a key force in that defensive push as he set a single-season blocked shots record with four blocks in the game. Fraser now has 48 on the season, surpassing Shaun Johnson's previous mark of 46 set last season.
“We have dubbed him the Kelvin-ator, you have the Terminator, we have the Kelvin-ator,” joked Stewart. “He gets a little smirk on his face when we call him that. He is playing so well right now. It's not just the four he blocked, but the 10-11 he altered and the 10-11 that don't come in there.”
MSU built an early lead behind strong 3-point shooting from Kal Bay, Nathaniel Packineau and Bojan Janjic. All three hit key shots to push MSU to a 41-25 halftime lead, but it was Bay's overall shooting from beyond the arc that stood out.
“When he gets on a roll… ,” Stewart said. “He got himself going and then we ran some sets for him. He has broken his wrist in the past and hurt it pretty good tonight. We will have to keep our fingers crossed.”
The Beavers (8-10 overall, 2-2 DAC) won for the third straight time – the longest winning streak of the season. MSU did a solid job of taking away most of Mayville's offensive weapons and did not allow the Comets (5-10, 0-3) to get their running game into high gear.
“We did a good job during the broken game of being disaplined in what we were doing,” Stewart said. “They had a couple six-point runs here and there, but we didn't let them get going.”
Part of the calming process is normally fiery guard Jason West. West has been both a calming agent and a floor general for the Beavers during the winning streak. He finished with 12 points, four rebounds, eight assists and just one turnover Saturday.
“We have asked him to do that (lead the team) and he has done an outstanding job of it,” Stewart said. “It is absurd what he is doing on the court right now.”
Shavontae Samuels and Sean Greene led Mayville with 14 points apiece. Ross Aman paced the team with nine rebounds.
MSU got 20 from Bay, hitting 6 of 11 3-pointers. Packineau added 15 points, hitting three 3s, and pulled down seven boards. Janjic scored 14 and Fraser added 10 points and seven boards for the Beavers.
Minot plays at Dickinson State in conference Wednesday (7:30 p.m. MT) and finishes off its exhibition schedule with a trip to coach Stewart Alma Mater, NCAA Division I University of North Dakota Thursday (8 p.m.).
