Fraser blocks Beavers to win

Junior Kalvin Fraser sets career blocks record in one season

Minot State's Kalvin Fraser looks to score against Jamestown College earlier in the season. Fraser set the MSU career record for blocked shots Saturday.
MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's Kelvin Fraser's (Jr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.) status as "big man in the middle" has been elevated.
The 6-foot-8 Fraser set the Beavers career shot block record – doing so in just one not-quite-complete season of play – set a single game blocks record and recorded the Beavers second triple-double of the year.
Fraser scored 12 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked 10 shots to lead the Beavers to a 72-65 upset win over No. 25 South Dakota Mines in Dakota Athletic Conference men's basketball Saturday at the MSU Dome.
“Kelvin was outstanding on defense – what else can you say?” said MSU head coach Peter Stewart.
The Beavers (6-8 DAC, 12-16 overall) trailed early on by as many as 13 points, but battled back to take a 41-35 halftime lead, getting to the 45 points on a 3-pointer by Nathaniel Packineau (Sr., G, Parshall, N.D.) just before the buzzer. Packineau hit four 3s in the game and finished with 14 points for the Beavers.
“We joke about a lot of things about coaching. One of those things is what motivates and what doesn't,” Stewart said. “We got a great effort from the guys and I am happy for them, but I don't know exactly what it was.”
Mines (9-5, 17-11) erased the Beavers halftime lead quickly in the second half and both teams battled from there. MSU, however, held the Hardrockers to just 33 percent shooting in the second half and 31.7 overall to pull away late.
“I thought Kalvin and Anothony (Anthony Enriquez, Jr., G, Tacoma, Wash.) played well on defense,” Stewart said.
MSU shot the ball well most of the night, hitting 43 percent from the floor, including a 15-for-30 showing in the first half, but struggled from the free throw line. MSU was just 5 of 12 in the first half and ended at 21 of 35 overall. Mines wasn't much better, knocking down 21 of 31, but just 6 of 10 in the second half.
Mines got 13 points from Nathan Jacobson and 10 apiece from Michael Dietz and Kyle Doer, but the finished 11 of 34 from the field. Scott May pulled down a team high seven rebounds.
Fraser became the Beavers all-time leader in blocked shots in just one – not quite complete – season with his 79th block of the season. He passed Shaun Johnson's mark of 76 in a career and topped Johnson's single-game record of eight. It was the Beavers second triple double of the year.
Jason West (Sr., G, Lompoc, Calif.) scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds for MSU and Kal Bay (Sr., G, Chandler, Ariz.) added 12 points and three assists. Bojan Janjic (Sr., G, Kikinda, Serbia) added eight points and seven rebounds for the Beavers. MSU outrebounded Mines 46-39.
“I'm happy for the seniors and we want to enjoy this one, but we have to get right back to work,” said Stewart.
The Beavers finished tied for fifth in the conference with Dakota State, but earned the fifth seed in the DAC tournament due to the tiebreaker. The Beavers will get one more crack at rival Dickinson State, the No. 4 seed, Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Dickinson. The Blue Hawks defeated the Beavers in both regular season matchups this year.
