Dragons burn Minot State in road loss

Minot State drops to 6-22 overall

Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minot State University volleyball hit for a .055 average in a loss to Northern Sun opponent Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday afternoon.

MISU was swept in straight sets 25-15, 25-17, 25-17. The Beavers made 22 hitting errors throughout the match while only getting 28 kills.

Minnesota State University Moorhead (15-12 overall 7-11 NSIC) was led by Meredith Egeland with nine kills. Katy Ness also had a solid defensive game with 18 digs.

The Beavers (6-22 overall 2-16 NSIC) struggled to get anything going offensively. Freshman Mallory Sall (OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) led the team with 10 kills but needed 44 attempts to get there. Sall also had nine digs in the match.

“Moorhead focused on Mallory and that was to be expected,” said MISU head coach Travis Ward. “Our middle hitters played well and are coming along. They will be good middle's in the NSIC in the future. Today we just didn't execute our passing like we needed to.”

The injury bug has been a familiarity around the MISU team this year; it claimed another, as Mariah Zaback (So., Kennewick, Wash.) had to sit out Saturday's match due to a concussion suffered in Thursday's loss to Northern State. That left MISU with only seven active players to take on the Dragons.

“With Mariah out, it's just one more injury we have had to deal with,” said Ward. “Our group is playing hard but it's just tough to get going without key parts of our team out.”

Setter Emily Byrne (So., Reno, Nev.) dished out 25 assists in the loss. Byrne now has 858 assists on the season.

“I will say one thing about this team, I am proud of the way they have handled themselves throughout this whole season. As it nears an end, I think our girls have done a nice job of never giving up and keeping a positive attitude and I hope we can continue that in the future.”

Minot State will play two more matches on the season; both will come on the road. The Beavers will take on No. 5 ranked University of Minnesota Duluth Friday Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. They will then finish their 2012 campaign in St. Cloud, Minn. as they look to go out with a win against St. Cloud State University on Saturday Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.
