Box Score 2 FAYETTE, Iowa – The Minot State University baseball team split its first two conference games on Friday.
In their first game the Beavers relied on dominant pitching in the 10-2 win as starting pitcher
Austin Berntson (Sr., Minot, N.D.) threw 10 strikeouts and allowed just three hits with no earned runs.
Wyatt Moore (So., Aurora, Ore.) came in to close the game and struck out three of the four batters faced in the final inning.
"Berntson was good," head coach
Brock Weppler said. "He came out and set the tempo for the day. Attacked hitters, filled up the zone and got a ton of strikeouts because of it. The bats as the game went on got hot and got a big lead for us. Wyatt had a lead coming in there, but he still did a great job and got strikes."
The MSU offense, which has been firing on all cylinders of late, scored 10 runs on eight hits and was again led by
Jordan Schulz (OF, Jr., Strasbourg, Saskatchewan) who had two runs, two hits, and two RBIs in three at bats.
Sean Alp (SS, Jr., Mississauga, Ontario) also had two hits for the Beavers while
Micah Holmen (1B, Sr., Minot, N.D.) and
Keith Ailes (DH, Sr., Bozeman, Mont.) added two RBIs apiece.
In the second game of the day, Minot State fell 14-4 as the Peacocks scored at least one run in every inning, including three and four runs in the sixth and seventh, respectively.
Ailes and
Taylor Williamson (3B, Jr., Creswell, Ore.) both batted 1.000 with Ailes going two-for-two and Williamson going three-for-three with one RBI.
Geordie McDougall (2B, Fr., Lumsden, Saskatchewan) recorded two hits, both doubles, and brought in two runners.
Minot State will play another doubleheader at Upper Iowa tomorrow, March 26, beginning at 12 p.m.
