Minot State’s DMR sets record, Kori Nagel turns in season-bests as Beavers make push toward NSIC meet

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Another record fell and more Minot State student-athletes turned in season-best efforts as the Beaver track and field teams continued their march toward the NSIC Championships later this month.

Saturday at the Grand Valley State Big Meet in Michigan, the Minot State men's distance medley relay team turned in new NCAA Division II-era school records, while Kori Nagel led the way for the Minot State women's throwers closer to home at the South Dakota State Indoor Classic, recording a pair of season-best efforts.

The Minot State quartet of Jacob Jensen, Lewis Cotterill, Juan Gutierrez, and Joseph Green finished 23rd in the DMR in Michigan in a time of 10 minutes, 18.99 seconds, which is two seconds better than the teams' previous season best and their own NCAA Division II school record. The Beavers' DMR performance also lands them at No. 3 in the NSIC.

Meanwhile, closer to home, Nagel led the way for the Minot State women's throwers as she was sixth in the shot put on Saturday at South Dakota State's Indoor Classic with a throw of 44 feet, 9.75 inches, her best performance of the winter which ranks her seventh in the NSIC.

Adding to her strong day, Nagel was seventh in the weight throw with a mark of 53-11.75, again a season-best performance which puts her at No. 8 in the conference standings and broke the NCAA Division II-era school record in the event of 52-2.75 set by Breanna Johns-Oster last year.

While she led the way with a pair of season-bests, Nathan Trujillo-Aragon, Leif Nelson, and Emily Hansen also had their best efforts of the winter and climbed the NSIC standings in their respective events.

Nelson was seventh in the men's shot put on Saturday with a throw of 50 feet, 10.25 inches, a season-best effort that ranks him No. 8 in the NSIC.

Hansen was 11th in the 600 meters in 1 minute, 40.88 seconds, also a season best that puts her at No. 23 in the event in the conference standings.

And Trujillo-Aragon finished 20th on the day in the 60 hurdles in 8.85 seconds, his best effort in the event and a performance that put him 23rd in the NSIC, as well.

The Minot State track and field teams have one more weekend of regular-season competition before heading to the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 25-26 hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato. Before the championship meet, the Beavers compete next weekend on Friday and Saturday at the Black Hill State Stinger Open.
