Minot State falls in three at Mary

Beavers earn just 53 points in three games

BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Mary only allowed Minot State University a total of 53 points over three games to defeat the Beavers 3-0 in nonconference women's volleyball Tuesday at the McDowell Activity Center Tuesday.
“We didn't focus on what needed to be done,” said MSU head coach Johnna Torr. “We sat back on our heels on defense and didn't get after the ball.”
MSU's best games were No. 1 and 3 as the Beavers pushed to 20 points before falling 25-20 in game 1 and 25-21 in game 3. Mary won game 2 going away 23-12.
The Beavers were in game 1 until midway through. MSU tied the game on a Shari Dueck (Sr., RS, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) kill and two errors by the Marauders, but Mary steadily pulled away from there. In game 3, the Beavers earned a 19-18 lead on a kills by Sara Friesen (MH, Fr., Brandon, Manitoba), but Mary won seven of the next nine points.
MSU finished with a 44-22 deficit in kills as Janice Rose Reinbolt (Jr., MH, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan) paced the Beavers with seven. Jen Dixon (Fr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) had five and Friesen and Chelsey Bryant (Fr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) had four each.
“Chelsey gave us a spark in the third game off the bench, but overall the team needed to show more desire and more effort,” Torr said.
Mary got 12 kills each from Laci Murtha and Amanda Hennessy and 38 assists from Emily Turkowski in the win.
Abbey Aide (So., Setter, Bottineau, N.D.) finished with 22 assists and five digs for MSU. She and Emily Hoehn (So, Libero, Lanigan, Saskatchewan) tied for the lead with five digs each as MSU mustered just 21 for the match.
MSU returns to Dakota Athletic Conference play this weekend as they play host to Dakota State Friday (7 p.m.) and Mayville State Saturday (3 p.m.).
