Optimism present in loss to UMC

Minot State battles, but falls to Crookston in four sets

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – There was a lot of good things to be taken away from the Minot State University volleyball match Saturday night.

Unfortunately, a win wasn't one of those things as the Beavers fell to the University of Minnesota, Crookston in four sets 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate action at the MSU Dome.

Minot State (3-8 overall, 0-2 NSIC) battled back in multiple sets, but in the end made too many mistakes to gain a victory. In set four, the Beavers committed double-digit hitting errors; opening the door for the Golden Eagles to snatch a win.

“I felt we had them on the ropes a few times,” said head coach Travis Ward. “But in the end, we can't beat ourselves like we did tonight. We need to cut down on our errors.”

Minot State fell behind early in the first set, as UMC had pushed their lead to 21-14. It was a constant theme throughout the night, as the Beavers battled back with some strong serving from sophomore Emily Byrne (S, Reno, Nev.) to push UMC to squeaking out of set one with a win.

In set number two, the Beavers were strong as they were on the attack early an often. Freshman Mallory Sall (OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) played her best set of the night helping MISU tie things at 1-1. Sall led the Beavers with 19 kills throughout the match.

“Mallory played fantastic for us tonight,” said Ward. “She showed why we recruited her tonight and she showed what she is capable of. For a freshman to come out and have a strong match against a solid opponent, it's impressive.”

Senior Shari Hewson (MH, New England, N.D.) also attacked well, totaling 11 kills in just 23 attacks. Bryne did a great job of facilitating the attack as she had 40 set assists.

It was more of the same in sets three and four; MISU battling back and playing close, but just not having enough to take a game.

“Our kids played the game right tonight,” said Ward. “I was really proud to coach this team tonight. I don't say that often after a loss, so that says something. I am excited to see this team move forward and I think the girls see that and believe that for the first time in a few matches.”

MISU will regroup quickly as they travel south to Bismarck, N.D. on Tuesday Sept. 18 to face conference rival University of Mary. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
