Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. – Minot State University jumped out to a 25-8 set 1 win and didn't let up as the Beavers swept the University of Mary on the road 3-0 to earn MISU's second straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference sweep Tuesday.
The Beavers (9-12 overall, 5-7 NSIC) limited the Marauders to just .080 hitting percentage in the match and held a 36-26 advantage in kills to finish off two-match sweep of the rival Marauders.
"It was a good win for us," said MISU head coach
Travis Ward. "We've got two in a row on the road and that isn't an easy thing to do in this conference and I think it's the first time since we've been here that we have done that (two straight on the road). More importantly, it's a must win for us when you are talking about getting into the conference tournament."
Jen Dixon (Jr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) continued to drill kills at a torrid pace, knocking down a match-high 11 on just 23 attempts. She also finished with an assist and six digs for the Beavers.
The match tightened up after the first set as U-Mary (4-15, 1-11) battled back in both the second and third set to make things interesting. In set 2, U-Mary took a 19-18 lead, before the Beavers finished with three kills by Dixon, two by
Tarah Dabovich (So., MH, Phoenix, Ariz.), one by
Mallory Sall (So., OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and an ace by Dixon on set point.
In the third set, Dixon and
Kelsey Wingo (Sr., MH, Twain Harte, Calif.) pushed the Beavers to a 20-17 lead before the teams traded errors down the stretch. MISU finished things off with a block by Sall and
Erin Davis (So., MH, Strathmore, Alberta) on match point.
"We struggled with some consistency and made some errors we just can't make in the last set," Ward said. "Give (U-Mary) some credit, they made some changes, changed their libero and made some big digs, but we responded to (the Marauders' improved defense) and some negative calls in the third. I think that says a lot about our team to respond like that."
Lauren Boldt paced the Marauders with six kills, while Alexis Jacobs added 12 digs and five assists.
Emily Byrne (Jr., S, Reno, Nev.) finished with 29 assists for the Beavers, while Sall paced the defense with 10 digs and two block assists.
Minot State returns home for a pair of NSIC matches this weekend, taking on the No. 1 ranked team in the country Concordia-St. Paul Friday (7 p.m.) and Minnesota State Saturday (4 p.m.).
